Blackberry Pearl 8100 is although an old model but still it has some features which makes people to use it. Explore the features of a Pearl and buy one if you like it.
Introduction
If we are comparing Bold and Pearl, surely, Pearl is much lower technology compare to Bold. So I can’t talk too much on the technology on Pearl, most of them are standard for a product released in 2006. However, this review is worth to be done since the phone is still available in the market and many people are still keeping this Pearl, like my friend’s father.
Blackberry Pearl is coming with a serial number 8100. Blackberry has made several sisters for this 8100 series like 8110 (released in 2008) and 8120 (released in 2007). Don’t worry, there is not much different between these sisters. If we compare 8100 and 8120, they just add Wi-Fi on 8120, which is not very important at that time and additional megapixel for the camera. In the following year, Blackberry decided to take out the Wi-Fi from 8110 and back to the original like 8100, they just keep the camera with 2 mp like 8120.
Performance
The main purpose of Blackberry is the email function, instant messaging and of course, browsing. The advantage of Blackberry is easy setting, menu arrangement and high speed data transfer. This phone is excellent for user who doesn’t want to learn on how to set the GPRS on a phone, we don’t need to fill in the mail server, SMTP, etc. The best of all, Blackberry phone can set up to 10 email account and all of them are on integrated mailbox. 8100 is also a convenient way for chatting. We can use Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk very easily with this 8100. Unfortunately, this phone is not quite famous at that time.
Design
Blackberry Pearl is one of the smallest Blackberry ever made. If we are comparing it with Bold and Curve, the Pearl is definitely smaller and lighter. The weight is only 90 grams comparing to Bold takes about 133 grams. But of course, it is not the shape that people like for their Blackberry.
Main Feature
The main feature from Pearl is the SureType. RIM as the producer of Blackberry has added SureType on the QWERTY keyboard, which is a designed system by RIM to make a unique keyboard. On this SureType, one button is used for two letters. The phone is also equipped with software to guess what kind of words that is typed by user. Believe me, it is not easy to type with this system because we already familiar with regular keyboard or 12 buttons in regular phone. But for me, it is fun since it is the first time for me playing with this kind of keyboard :)
Package
In sales package, we can get the handset, battery, 128 mb memory card, manual book and CD, holster, and charger. The charger already equipped with different plugs for different countries. It will be very handy if we are travelling to overseas.
Conclusion
Many first time users are not happy with the keyboard. It takes time for them to get familiar with the buttons. Many users need to use the trackball more often, scrolling it to the left and right, just for checking whether they are typing correctly. Anyway, Blackberry is keeping this SureType keyboard on 8110 and changes it to the QWERTY on Pearl Flip 8220.I think it is a wise decision, especially, the growing of Wi-Fi community everywhere, Blackberry is the best tools for internet users.
